A  Pokey Little Creature

Guess this animal! It has spines on it and it looks like a pincushion. It’s the Pincushion Urchin! The Pincushion Urchin can be a variety of colors. Some of the colors are black, green, white, purple, blue, and more. This urchin is like a small, round, ball. No bigger than a person’s fist. The Pincushion Urchin is not a sponge. It is in the spiny-skinned phylum. This urchin has its mouth on the bottom of its body. It also has two feet, just like us! The Pincushion Urchin has little spines all over its body. (No wonder they’re called the “Pincushion” Urchin) The spines are good protection for this urchin.

Here are some interesting facts about them. Their scientific name is Lytechinus vaniegatus. I was very surprised when I found out that they shed. Yep! I was able to observe one shedding. It was quite a sight.

The Pincushion Urchin can move on its own. All of them have small holes on the top of their body. They can get up to 8 inches long.  Pincushion Urchins are very peaceful animals. The Pincushion Urchin lives in coral reefs. Their homes are among the rocks, and in crevices in rocks. In the day they will usually hide in their homes. Then, at night they will come out to find food. The Pincushion Urchin eats micro algae and encrusting coralline. The Pincushion Urchin is an amazing animal, and I hope you’ve learned some factsabout it.
