 Service learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community. Service learning helps to teach civic responsibility; it encourages a lifelong commitment to active citizenship; and in the end it strenghthens/enhances communities. There are several key components to successful service learning projects: 1. Service learning needs to directly connect to classroom/grade level curriculum. 2. Students must have the opportunity to help design, implement and evaluate their service learning projects. 3. Teachers must provide students with multiple opportunities to think about, talk about, and write about their service learning experience - this is how they come to know that they have really made a difference! 4. There must be a partnership between school and community, and the service learning opportunities must meet "real life" needs (authentic community needs). At Blissfield Elementary School, we are committed to making a difference in our community. Our teachers provide multiple opportunities for service learning projects. These projects are a direct extension of the teaching and learning that takes place everyday. The projects are not just "fun things to do", but they are instead hands-on opportunities for students to master grade level curriculum in the core content areas of mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. Service learning helps to make academic content "come alive." When students come to the realization that they can and do make a difference in the lives of others, they become more responsible citizens. Throughout this school year, this "service learning link" will highlight some of the many service learning projects our students and teachers participate in. For our teachers, the service learning opportunties they help to design for their students are a demonstration of the passion they have for making a difference in the lives of others.
