Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year at Blissfield Middle School! I hope that you have had an enjoyable summer. It is this time of year that I become energized for the students and staff to return as we continue to make preparations for the upcoming year. The Blissfield Middle School theme this year will be “Code of the Royal Throne” This Code consists of the following character traits: Positive Attitude, Integrity, Respect, Work Ethic, Responsibility and Compassion. It is our hope that every individual connected to BMS implements these traits throughout the school year, and beyond. They are posted in our locker area by name and brief explanation. Be sure to check them out when you visit the building. This theme also supports our mission statement, which claims Blissfield Community Schools provides the programing, culture, and climate necessary to create well-rounded, creative, critical thinkers.
Parents and students can stay informed about all things BMS by subscribing to Remind, a one-way text messaging service. To join (if you have not already joined in the past), send the text @blissfi to (318) 450-6977. Facebook users can also join the Official Blissfield Middle School Group.
Our registration process will once again be online. Parents should go to www.blissfieldschools.us and click on “Online Resources” followed by “Home Access Center.” Then, enter the user name and password (included in this letter) to begin. Students receive their own user name and password, but do not have the ability to edit registration information. The registration process is not complete until you check the “I Agree” box and click “SUBMIT” at the bottom of your registration page, even if all information is correct and no changes are necessary. Like last year, students will be given their schedules at open house only after we have verified that the information has been updated. We will have computers available at open house for those who need internet access. Parents can also come to school any day prior to open house during office hours to use a computer. Please register early!!
As in the past, the daily start time at the middle school and high school will begin at 7:50 AM and conclude at 2:54 PM. Our first day of school is Tuesday, September 5 and will be a full day for students. Like last year, the bus loop pick up and drop off pattern will be along the sidewalk on the east side of our parking lot near the football field. This will allow for a parent loop to pick up students on the west side of the parking lot near the tennis courts.
I encourage you to attend our annual Open House on Wednesday, August 30 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Students will receive class schedules (after updated registration is verified), locker assignments and parents will gain information about our school year. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. a brief informational presentation is open to all BMS families but specifically directed toward incoming 6th graders as well as new enrollees and their parents. Due to the implementation of the MSTEP testing last spring, data for the 2016-2017 Annual Report has not been made available to schools in Michigan. We are told that data will be given to us at a later. When reports are completed, constituents will be notified.
Students will be issued a photo identification badge free of charge. Should a student badge become damaged or lost, students/parents will be expected to purchase a replacement badge in the building office for $5.00. Students will be expected to wear these daily and must be visible on the front of their person. Students can provide their own school-appropriate lanyard or purchase one through the office. I.D. badges have been bar coded with their student number and will be used to access their student accounts in the lunch line and for other school business. All K-12 school staff will be wearing I.D. badges as well.
Our food services will be operating in full swing on our student’s first day of school. Breakfast is available for $1.50, milk is $.50, and lunch prices are $2.90 for the tray lunch. Each student will use their student I.D. badge to access a credit account. Parents have the opportunity to place money on student accounts through the school website and are encouraged to establish an account to pay for meals. Information about applying for free and reduced school meals are available online or in our office.
Our student dress code is consistent with last year, with no new changes for 2017-2018. As a reminder, students are permitted to wear shorts of appropriate length and flip flops before Thanksgiving and upon returning from Spring Break. Leggings may be worn if a shirt, skirt or shorts are at least fingertip length. Please help us enforce that all shorts and skirts must be at least finger tip length above the knees and all shirts must cover the shoulders and midriff. All garments must be in good repair and free of holes. We appreciate parents’ help with upholding our dress code.
Once again, please visit www.blissfieldschools.us to log on to Home Access Center to complete and submit your student’s necessary school registration forms. Be certain to click “SUBMIT” when finished. If you do not have internet access we will have our computer lab open for those who wish to complete the registration process during Open House on August 30.

As a reminder when reporting student absences, all absences for students in grades K-12, need to be reported to x-200 when calling any of the school buildings. This system will alleviate the necessity to call each building individually and you can now report all student absences with one call to x-200.
