Developing Responsiblity Is Vitally Essential

In an effort to improve student academic success the Blissfield Middle School  has adopted the DRIVE (Developing Responsibility Is Vitally Essential) Program. This program serves to both offer students an incentive to complete their assignments in a timely manner with high quality standards in mind, and offer every student the opportunity for free tutoring every night after school.

At the beginning of each school year the DRIVE Program will be explained to both the students and parents at the annual BMS Open House. The program will then be explained again to students by their first hour teacher. Upon completion of the explanation of DRIVE students will then be expected to complete all of their assignments on time and in a high quality fashion. Students not choosing to honor these expectations can expect the following:

  • First incomplete assignment: verbal warning
  • Second incomplete assignment: student is assigned an academic lunch and given one academic point. At this point the student must finish their assignment during lunch or take it home, complete it, and turn it into the teacher before school starts on the following day. Failure to complete the assignment and turn it in before school starts will cause the cycle to repeat itself and the student to gain another academic point. The accumulation of four academic points will result in the student being enrolled into the after-school segment of the DRIVE Program. In order to deter students from completing their already due work in another subject classroom students are required to turn in their assignments before their first hour class begins. Assignments turned in after the first hour bell will be accepted, however, the student will still be assessed another academic point, and they will have to attend an academic lunch for that day.
  • If a student completes all of their assignments for five consecutive days, and they are not yet enrolled into the after school segment of the program, they will lose one academic point. This is significant because once a student accumulates four academic points their parents will be called and the student will be enrolled into the after school segment segment of the program for the remaining portion of the school year.
  • Once a student enters the after school part of the program they will be required to stay after school each night that an assignment is not completed, from 3-4pm, to finish that assignment up. Parents will called each day that their son or daughter as to stay between 1-2pm. Parents, or a designated person, will then pick the student up at 4 pm. If a student does not complete their assignment during the after school DRIVE segment they will be expected to take the assignment home, finish it up, and turn it into the teacher before school starts on the following day.
  • Students will receive a maximum score of 60% for all assignments turned in from the DRIVE Program.
  • Students who wish to obtain tutoring from that evening's DRIVE teacher must sign up in the office by noon so that their parents can be contacted.
