Mrs. Griffith's Greetingsfor the week of Feb. 6 - 10, 2012 We had another great week, parents! Please note all of the special information as we continue to work hard preparing for our 100th Day of School celebration and Valentine's Day as well. Here's a look at the week ahead: Language Arts: We will be sharing the story, The Three Little Kittens. Our literacy stations and high frequency word practice will focus on letter Kk and introduce two new red words: have and little. Our handwriting work will focus on the formation of letter Kk, as well as review of our previous letters and high frequency words. Please note that as we look to the conclusion of this second marking period, our expectations rise a bit. We do expect that students are printing both first and last names correctly, as well as recognizing all letters and words presented to this point. We will be expanding and applying these concepts to our writing journals and daily work as well. Also, as our read-a-loud books continue to get a little more challenging, I strongly encourage you to practice, practice, practice with your child. Have them hunt for specific words, touch and read each word, sound out unknown words, etc. Your encouragement and support will go far in helping your child. (I'm referring to the little copied books that they bring home on Fridays.) Math: In math this week, we will: solve a problem by acting it out and drawing a picture, pay for items to $1.00 using dimes, identify seasons on a pictograph, and compare lengths of objects. Science: We will continue working on a new unit comparing and contrasting living and non-living things. Social Studies: We continue to talk at length about the importance of our school and classroom rules. Please review with your child! We will continue sending home the "Show & Tell" Bag. This week, we will celebrate Katlyn Goodman as our *Student of the Week!" We will also continue a new unit comparing and contrasting the past, present, and future.
Other Important Reminders: *Jan./Feb. Book Orders are in the mail. Look for them in the next week or so. *Information regarding our 100th Day Celebration and our Valentine's Day Party went home last week. If you have questions, please let me know. * We started our Reading Charts! Ask your child how they can fill a row and earn a prize! We have already had several readers fill a row and even one friend earn a "Big Whammie" prize by filling up an entire chart! That is over 30 books read...wow! *Baggie Books are going awesome! Thank you for taking extra good care of these leveled reading books. This is such a positive, exciting time for your child as they begin to grow and find success as a reader! Please read the detailed note carefully, and enjoy! Also, don't hesitate to jot me a little note and put it in the bag letting me know how your child is doing. If their level becomes too easy for them, that is a good indication to me that it is time for me to reassess their reading level. We want them to be successful at reading their baggie books, but at the same time be challenged a bit. * Summer "half" birthdays will be recognized in February. If your child has a summer birthday, you should have gotten a note from me with specific information. If you did not, or have a question, please let me know. *Please note that as the weather gets colder, it is extremely important that you send your child with the appropriate clothing and layers to play outside. Warm coats, hats, mittens or gloves, boots, etc. are so important. We do go out every day, with the exception of extreme rain, or wind chills in the single digits. Parents, one of our friends lost a pair of black, size 7/8. If your child brought them home by mistake, please let me know. *Please return all library books (and BAGGIE BOOKS!) by Wednesday. Thanks! *We are saving many things for our classroom. If you can save, collect, and send in any of the following items, it would be very much appreciated: box tops, Campbell's soup labels, pop tabs, frosting containers, and cube shaped tissue boxes. The more box tops our classroom collects, the more prizes we earn, so please send them in if you have them! Thanks to all who have sent them in! By the way, we have earned level one prizes: popsicles for all! We are really close to our next prize: a new game for our classroom! Keep saving!
Sincerely, Mrs. Griffith
