Class sessions will consist of- lectures, reading, note-taking, videos, and discussion/participation and of course tests and quizzes.     

 What you will need to be successful in this class:

The following items will be required daily from you. 

 

  Required Text:         “A History of the United States” Boorstin & Kelley

 

1.  Reading-You will be assigned various reading assignments (in/out class) from       your book. Please bring your book to class! If you fail to have your textbook on the day we are using it, you will receive a reduced grade for that reading or writing assignment!    

 

2.      Worksheets-you will receive worksheets that will come from your assigned reading, most worksheets will be collected and graded! Worksheets will help you with your chapter tests.

 

3.      Lecture-lectures are a big part of my class, it is important for you to be in class to hear the material.  You will need an organized notebook to contain your notes. If you are absent the day of a lecture, please be sure to get the notes from a peer, you may borrow my notes during VIP.  Please have a notebook that I can keep for grading purposes. I will collect/grade your notebook at the end of a chapter, this will be returned to you after I have graded and recorded your points.    Please be aware that I write my own tests and tests questions generally come from my lecture notes.

4.      Tests-you will receive a test at the end of the chapter, my tests come from both the textbook and lecture notes.  Test questions are worth 2 pts. each and are fill in the blank with essay questions.

  

5.      Reading quiz-after you complete a reading assignment, you will occasionally be given a reading quiz. Quiz questions will be worth one point and will be a good study guide for your chapter test.  You will not be allowed to make-up reading quizzes.  

 

Attendance:  You are responsible for work missed in the classroom.  You will receive one make-up day per each day absent.  However, it will be your responsibility to obtain missed work/assignments and notes.  If you do not obtain missed assignments you will receive a zero.  Please note student handbook policy.

 

Tardy(s): Class begins when the bell rings.  Three tardies per hour will equal one absence for the class. I will also remove two points per tardy, please be punctual, your grade depends on it! Please note student handbook policy.

 

Grading:  Your grade for the class will be based on the total number of points earned throughout the semester.  Grades will be posted after we complete a chapter.

100-90=A

89-80=B

79-70=C

69-60=D

59 and lower=F

 

Late assignments-will be accepted one day late, however, your grade will be reduced by 50%

 No Names-Assignments with no names will be reduced by 50% 

Final:   Cumulative=20% of your grade, each card marking period will be worth 40%

 

Silent Sustained Reading-Please have a book/novel to read during this 10 minute session, as always, books will be available for you if you do not have one.  Please use this time to quietly read your book/novel, no magazines or school related materials will be accepted!

 

Seating:  assigned seats alphabetically, 1st semester only. 

 

Passes:  No passes will be issued, so please do not ask!!

 

Extra-Credit:  Extra-credit will be accepted throughout the semester and may be used towards any graded assignment in class.  You may earn extra-credit for bulletin board projects, perfect attendance & presentations.  Please note that you cannot use your extra-credit points towards your final semester exam

 

Fabulous Five:  Top five test scores will be showcased on a poster, your efforts will be rewarded with 10 bonus points and a candy bar.

 

VIP:  You may wish to attend VIP in my classroom, however, please be sure to have something to work on, IT IS NOT A SOCIAL HOUR!  If you cannot stay busy I will have to ask you to leave and not return to my VIP for an extended period of time.

If you do not have academic work, please bring something to read.
